A LAPRA representative will personally assist the surviving member or dependent by walking them step-by-step through how to continue medical, dental and vision coverage and how to file life insurance claims.
Health Coverage Options
- Surviving dependents of active members whose death was not inline of duty are eligible to continue medical and dental coverage through COBRA.
- Surviving dependents of active members, whose death is classified as in the line of duty, should contact LAPRA for all health benefits information. You may also contact LAPD’s Employee Assistance Unit at (213) 486-0190 for information on other resources.
- Surviving dependent of retired members may be eligible for a pension and heath subsidy from the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions (LAFPP). Contact LAFPP at (213) 279-3115 or lafpp.com for more information.
Updating Your Beneficiaries
When your designated life insurance beneficiary dies, you will want to update the beneficiaries for your life insurance plans. To do so, go to LAPRAlive.org.
